Writing Lab Policies

All Writing Lab appointments are 45 minutes. You will be able to select an appointment starting on each hour, and the first 45 minutes of that time will be alloted to you.

Any student enrolled in a credit course at American University, undergraduate or graduate, full or part-time, degree or non-degree, is eligible to use the Writing Lab and schedule up to two appointments per week. Writing Lab counselors are specially qualified and trained to work with students with learning disabilities and ADHD, as well as international students and non-native speakers of English.

Writing lab counselors do not proofread or edit papers. They help students recognize and address recurring patterns of grammatical error.

The Writing Lab sessions are intended for students’ course writing assignments. The Lab does not review cover letters and personal statements.

Writing Lab counselors may not work with students on midterm exam essays without an instructor’s written permission specifying what feedback is allowed.

To ensure that appointments are maximized, the Writing Lab has a two missed appointments policy. If students have two missed appointments within the same academic year, their account privileges will be discontinued. For questions regarding this policy, please contact the Academic Support and Access Center at 202-885-3360.

In order to avoid a missed appointment, students must cancel an appointment at least four hours in advance. Students can cancel an appointment by logging onto this site and clicking on “My upcoming appointments.”
